Response to Lead Blog 1
The Office is a classic show that so many people are interested in and some people might even say they are addicted to the show because of how funny they find it. I have only watched a few episodes myself, but I should probably watch some more on Netflix because of how often the show comes up in class. I agree that the show uses the Incongruity Theory and the Superiority Theory in all the episodes. Dwight is a great example of the Incongruity Theory because whatever he does is always so unexpected, making his actions that much funnier. A good example brought up in the lead blog was when Dwight intentionally lights the fire in the office. I believe he was trying to teach the staff about fire safety in the building but instead of just having a presentation, he decides to create an actual fire in order for the staff to take the training seriously. This is the Incongruity Theory because he does something that is so unexpected that it is comedic and grabs the viewers attention. The Superiority Theory is also prevalent in The Office. The example on this is when Jim plays pranks on Dwight. This is one of the most famous parts of The Office and everyone who has seen the show can remember at least one of the times Jim has messed with Dwight. From one of the episodes I remember, Jim put Dwight's things in jello. This made Jim seem better and smarter than Jim because it was just funny that Jim was able to do that to him. This is an example of the Superiority Theory because the audience is laughing at Dwight for being so dumb to let that happen to him. All the pranks that are played on Dwight in the show are all examples of the Superiority Theory because they all make Jim seem better than Dwight when the audience laughs at him.
I wonder if we laugh at Dwight's superiority or his stupidity? I could see an argument either way. if he was really just totally dumb, then it might not be funny. There has to be a kind of refusal to see that about himself, a defiance that makes it funnier. At the same time, if we didn't feel he was a bit of a doofus, it might not be funny either.
ReplyDeleteI think this is very well written. I agree with your points about how Jim and Dwight's relationship demonstrates the Superiority Theory.
