I have never seen The Big Lebowski but apparently, it is a huge hit with large amounts of people and has many comedic aspects within it. I think the film is such a large hit it because of the genres it can fit into. The way the movie can be a western, a comedy, a drama, or even surrealist nonsense definitely draws a big crowd from all different parts of society. The events of this movie seem to be hysterical and very unexpected, which I suppose is where the incongruity theory can be seen in the film. Also based on the way Zach described him, I would agree that The Dude is easy to make fun of because of the things he does. This is a great use of the superiority theory at work in The Big Lebowski. The third theory that can be seen in this film is the relief theory. According to Zach, this theory comes up in the movie because of how real it feels to the audience because of the casual acting, even though the scenes are so far fetched. I think the Dude character seems so entertaining just because of how he does not care about anything and he is just going with the flow. I understand how this movie is so unforgettable simple because of this Dude character, even though he does not say much in the movie. Also, why does he not have a name, and does he ever get a name in the movie? I like how the example of the disgruntled Dude was brought in and his line about something being the other person's opinion. I think this quote helps to explain the movie because they talk like this the whole time, using words like "like" and "well." From reading this blog post, I think this film seems highly entertaining and is something I would like to watch.
I totally agree with you, I have never seen the movie as well but it has a large audience and seems pretty funny. I also wondered why the Dude character doesn't really have a name. I also agree with you on how the relief theory is really shown in the movie.
ReplyDeleteI really like what you had to say. I also never saw the movie but based off of Zach's description, it seems very good. I like how you touch on how relief theory is so prevalent based off the Dude's character, and maybe it's because the Dude doesn't really have a name that so many people relate to him.
