I have never watched the movie Superbad but I do know the scene that is talked about in the blog. This scene is popular on Twitter and other social media platforms because this is such an iconic movie. I can clearly tell that Superbad must be a funny movie solely from the "attempt to buy alcohol" scene. I can also tell how the two boys are trying so hard to seem cool by buying alcohol for the party they were invited to. I think it is so funny how they expect their friend, who looks 13, to buy them alcohol, not to mention the fact that his fake id says McLovin as his name. When "McLovin" goes to the cashier it is amusing that he is so scared because of the superiority theory. The audience knows what he is about to do is so dumb and he is definitely going to get caught. This makes it so much funnier that he is trying to be confident while making small talk but in reality, he is shaking and very nervous. The incongruity in the scene is also prevalent. One incongruity is when someone comes in and robs the store. It was the last thing I expected the cops to be called for. Another incongruity is how the police officers act. The audience expects them to be professional when trying to figure out what happened in the store. The racist questions and comments they say can also be seen as benign violation. This could be benign violation because of the fact that what they said could be considered offensive but not too much so that they could not put it in the movie. I enjoyed the lead blog and I think Superbad is a funny movie that I should watch.

  1. I have never watched the movie as well, but it is such a talked about movie that I also knew the scenes. I agree with you on how one of the most funny scenes in the movies is the "attempt to buy alcohol" scene, because it is a great way to show incongruity theory and benign violation theory.

  2. Do you think the movie would have worked as well without making McLovin famous?

  3. I like your analysis of the alcohol scene in Superbad. There is a ton more examples of incongruity, superiority, and benign violation theory in the film so i highly recommend watching the whole thing.
